It was actually our first real family vacation. What a way to start a tradition. We went to the Beaches Resort on the Turks and Caicos Islands. Now, one might say, clearly this family is part of the 1% that all those people talk about on the news. I say to you, "Nay Nay!!!" This vacation was sponsored by Diet Coke, McDonalds Monopoly, and Adam's sore throat last October. The all expense paid vacation was part of the Monopoly game chad winnings. People actually win those things. Who knew?
There was plenty of sun, surf, and sand. There were also plenty of pools, swim up bars, girly drinks, food, and fun. I think that the family enjoyed all of the above.

Nate getting chucked and making the best of the situation.
Eli getting ready for some snorkeling action.

Nate and Eli having thier first salt water mouth! Not meant for two.

Did I mention swim up bars for all ages with girly fruit drinks. Nate was in girly fruit drink heaven. He has developed a taste for virgin Pina Coladas and strawberry banana smoothies.

Cecily was very bold on the slides. She rode all the slides that she could.

We loved the pools. A rare moment of pool unity. Normally there was some kind of chucking, splashing, dunking, chasing, and near drowning going on.

Hopefully we can do this again someday!

Hiking Adventure

Yesterday we decided that Saturday is a special day, it is the day that we hike 2 miles up into Adam's Canyon and see the 40 foot waterfall. See number 3.

The hike is described as medium difficulty, with shades of death at the front end and right before the waterfall. We thought that they were just kidding. The first Quarter of a mile was sttep switchbacks up into the canyon. Not so bad, unless you add the scorching 98 degree sun coupled with sand and no shade. The rattlesnakes were taunting us. The kids wanted to give up, but with much persuasion, which included bribery (shaved ices afterwards), the troops made it into the canyon and shade.

They were very happy for the trees. In fact, this above represented outpouring of affection, was completely spontaneous and unscripted. They were very grateful for the shade and the cool breeze that wafted down the canyon.

The middle section was actually pretty nice. Rolling trails and few obstacles. The closer we got to the waterfall, however, the steeper and more difficult the terrain became. Cecily got her first taste of Indiana Jones style hiking as we dangled over a rushing torrent. Ok, so we had to slide across some rocks while the creek gurgled past below. It was a fierce gurlge though.
SO, we made it to the top and the view, and refreshing mist, was well worth the effort.

Our little tempterature sensative child, Cecily, was "not quite so sure" about the cold mist coming from the waterfall, so Nate, Eli, and I decided to show her how fun mountain waterfalls could be.
Apparently it was more than she could bear to watch. One, should note that she has set herself up quite nicely with all of the snacks. She is actually snacking under her shirt. It protects her from the harmful rays of the sun, the chilly mist, and from having to see Dad without his shirt on.

All in all, the hike was a sucess! Victory achieved, slushies eaten, hearts warmed, tears shed, memories forever ingrained. For those of you who don't know yet, We moved from NY to UT and have been setting up shop here. As seen above, Nate turned 10 years old, which truly messes me up everytime I think about it. Yes, I have a freaking 10 year old child. Not OK.
Thigs are going really well in UT. The kids have made friends, and this is really the first time they have lived in and area where we didn't have to make "play dates." My kids can just go outside and find other kids who want to play too. Novel. NO phone calls, NO pre-existing arrangements, just play. Can you believe that she is driving already? She must have sneaked out of the house so that she could answer 3rd Grade history questions:

Teacher:"The 5th vice president of the United States?"

Cecily: "Who is George Clinton, mam. Party!

Christmas was at Grandma Melanie and Grandpa Ron's this year. After a one year hiatus where we thought that we would do Christmas on our own, we were back. Apparently slothing around watching college football is not Amy's idea of a fun Christmas. I know? What is up?

So Joel and his new found honey Rebekah were sharing the yuletide joy with us. Soo0 the joy is apparent as they have passed the last 7 month in the relative peace of a student life. Silent Church, silent meals, silent nights? Really, besides Joel's constant Gangsta Rap tearing through his small apartment, the overall noise has been minimal. Not Christmas with the Greenway's. Nate was forced to read to his siblings all day long. This of course was under the oppressive rule of A.M.Y. That stands for "A"nything that is kinda fun "M"ight not be allowed this centur"Y". So of course she put them to work in the yard. Gardening and lawn care under the careful and watchful eye of Cecily the taskmaster.

She made those kids carry her around in the garden cart. In what, might you ask, were the the thorns and other yard waste transported in? They were moved by hand. NO easy work for these summer workers. When they had a day off from their labors, they were forced to attend educational locales.
Church history at its finest. Learning about the Prophet Joseph Smith is not only fun, it makes for a great photo opp. However, deep down the captives know that their summer is running short and that they had better start having fun in earnest. But not yet says A.M.Y.

"I give up!" cries Cecily. So inspired by the Salt Lake Temple that she shed her evil task master title to become one of the "Funsome three." No longer would they be held in sway by A.M.Y. They would break free and have fun unhindered. First came the small rebellous acts like the "bunny ears" and playing with a Dora ball when they should be slaving away preparing for the picnic.

Then came the blatant slothing around, relaxing and refusing to work. What could have precipitated this kind of industrious mutiny.

Of course its A.D.A.M! "A"nti-In"D"ustrious mostly slothful & "A"ways ready to party "M"an.

Thats right, thats right, don't listen to the crazy talk about work before play. Going to Great Grandma Hanson's house for a parade and picnic was the final act of mutiny. So much fun was had the A.M.Y. was converted to "A"ll fun things "M"ust happen before we leave Utah and go back to N."Y". So the fun ensued.
We had alot of play to do to get back in shape for a really fun time. School is over and the kids are running amok. The pool is open for business and nap time is a thing of the past whether we like it or not. So this evening aroung 7:00pm, the wife had one more activity in the plans. Unfortunately the "no nap" strategy caught up with Cecily.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v13.nonxt5.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D1eb42998c5068901%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331645169%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3DB6E39B94764723CEB60D462EFD5D93C6B884C4B.5A01684D4A53B7D5A7CE74059717CBF40EA27A83%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D1eb42998c5068901%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DRwg7eg4zx_UsfeW0mMcoYuyeT0M&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Poor Cecily. But really, he wanted to mow the lawn by himself. At first I said no, but I'm lazy, so his arguments of screams and stomping was really pursuasive. So I said, "Ok, but I'm going to follow you, and take pictures to document that we were safe." The rules were he could only go forward, not backward, and he had to stop to turn. I think he is destined to make those designs you see at the ball diamonds on TV.

They say that you should alternate the direction that you mow your lawn, you know alter between diagonal, vertical, and horizontal rows. I'm not sure, but I don't think we need to worry about that with Eli, he was pretty "row" challenged. But it was fun to oversee.

So before we could enjoy the summer time, we had to finish that pesky thing called school. What a drag! But, for Eli school means fun and excitement and learning that culminated in he Pre-K graduation.

The Class of 2009! First Nate and lacrosse! He was one of his teams face off guys. He is really good and is working on several different techniques to win the faceoff. He is also a midfielder, meaning he is running all the time. He is fast and tireless. He played last year and wasn't so sure that he wanted to play again. So we said, you can choose baseball, soccer, or lacrosse. Apparently some of the kids in his class conviced him and away he went. He did a great job and loved every minute of it. He even stepped in and played goalie one practice. CRAZY!

Now that the season is over, he is always asking to play in the backyard with our mini set. He can't get enough. Eli wants to play too, but he was to wait until he is in Kindergarten before he can play. Next year!

Joel's Wedding...at least my kids at Joel's wedding

So my baby brother got married. Yup Yup! Now there are no more Greenways on the market. This is a good thing with the economy the way it is. Joel got things long after the bubble burst on the inflated value of a unhindered Greenway. There once was a time when a Greenway might fetch 10 cows. I think Beksters got him for three squirrles and a three legged, blind possum. (The other leg was bitten off by her pet croc in FL.)

So here is the happy couple at the watering hole. John had some crazy need to photograph the red water thingy. Rebekah is alot of fun and a good sport. I hope she won't be too embarrassed by...

Oh man!!! I can't believe that my little bro... the horror!!! Well, none of the rest of the pictures can top this one, so you won't disappoint me if you decide not to look at the rest of this post.

So there has been alot about torture in the news lately, and I was looking at Joel's wedding photos. Anyone who has had the pleasure of getting married usually has to endure the rigors (torture) of the photo session. Not unlike abu gahraib prison one is made to dress up in a wholly uncomfortable outfit, generally meant to bring shame and embarrasment, and then ordered to stand around, or sit on hard wooden stairs, often times in uncomfortable positions. This is almost analogous to making kids pose for endless pictures of the bride. In defense to the bride, Bekkers, this was not her idea. Nor was it Wills, obviously. Notice the stunned faces of those only looking for an opportunity to escape.

The Mug Shots! Both Cecily and Eli look like they have been caught in the act. Now, some of you have seen Amy's entry about Nate, so I thought I would add a whole new demension to our sweet boy. That side would most likely have a name like Hiram Starslayer or something star warsy. The above book is an example of the books that he will check out of the school library and then expect us to enjoy several tasty selections. So in the recent past we have tried Yoda Soda (Lime Sherbet and Sprite) and Skywalker Smoothies (Ice, strawberries, orange juice, 1 Banana). Now, you may say, hey not that bad right. Sounds pretty tame if not downright cheesy. But then, I come home from work to find this select delicacy on the menu for the evening

Now, I am not sure haw many of you have seen Star Wars before. So this will be kinda a quiz of sorts. I am going to add a few pictures and if you can guess what the....uh... lil' smokey sculptures are supposed to be, then...uh...well...I'm sorry. I would offer to send the recipe, but that would open me up to unwanted liability for terrible syndromes and conditions such as whitetrashitis and redaneckaphobia. You might not get alot of damages for medical bills, but there are millions to be had in pain and suffering awards.

Exhibit #1

Exhibit #2

Exhibit #3

Well good luck and go ahead and put your answers in the comments section. Hooray! Amy made her a Zoey cake and she was in heaven. After her first piece of cake she proceeded to indulge herself with whatever was in her reach. So we promised the kids that if we sold our house in Kentucky that we would go the Chucky Cheese to celebrate. Well we still haven't sold it, but we have tenants renting with the intent to buy so we figured, close enough in this economy. Of course the older kids loved every detail. She loved the trick or treaters.

Well, the victors return! They were under orders to bring back lots of loot or be brought back on thier pumpkins. (Thinly veiled Spartan reference) Mission Thinly Veiled Spartan Reference was a resounding sucess. Dad got to stay home pass out candy and drink a Lime Diet Coke, and the warriors went forth and brought back the bacon.

This is the offering to the Oracle of Overland Trail. He demands swift payment of all of the loot and booty that was brought back from the conquests. (Actually, this is the candy that Nate does't like.) Yeah, that is what I said, my Kid doesn't like Kit Kat, Tootsie Rolls, Snickers, and Twix. There was some other assundries, but nice haul eh! Overall a pretty great day for all! (Notice the really great hand carved "wand." It has a snake twisting up the handle.)

Ok, so I'm a slacker. Eli wasn't too sure that the Maid fo the Mist was seaworthy. It was getting mighty close to those falls. But, he came around and we had a great time riding into the Falls. By the way, those ponchos don't really do that much good. Next, we went to Letchworth State Park or as it is known in these parts, "The Grand Canyon of the East." Well, if you are comparing the granduer of the Rockies to the Appalachians, then maybe you could make some comparison, but not really. There were three really beautiful waterfalls, and the park was accessible and fun. A great Saturday!Nice rag!For Labor Day we went to Little cousin Jackson's blessing in Kirtland. I love the slide pictures. We, as parents, spend so much time protecting them, only to turn around and eject them off of a plastic sheet! The abject fear is soon replaced....by sheer joy. (Don't worry, no tax dollars were used in the making of this lone memory of the training.) Right as we were about to get out tickets, another person offered my pal and I 2 tickets for free. So yeah, and the seats, 6 rows back from the home side of home plate. This photo was taken from my seat. So nice. $90 dollars worth of seats for the bargain price of a hot dog and a soda! (also about $90)
All in all this was a really great summer. A girl who likes clothes!

So, if the heading was not criptic enough, I will endeavor to explain the problem at hand. Amy in all her beauty and grace, does not really like to shop all that much. Be it because we cannot afford a shopper in the family or a rare genetic mutation that makes her adverse to the must have the lates trends addictions that many women have, I will never know. The issue is that Cecily has the addiction. It's bad. She's 18 months old. No esta bueno, no. Many will doubt and turn away from the obvious truth. they will scorn the blog and my words, only focusing on how darned cute she is. But I see it. Oh yes, she can't fool me. I will show you. I draw your attention to exhibit #1.

Exhibit #1

Here we see the subject trying on a pair of pants. Yes, that is what I said, "trying on." Cecily is alwys sampling the latest fashions whether they be in her room, or in the folded clothes basket, she will find them and try them on. Be it boys underware to the head (to be posted as further evidence) or this sylish pair of flowered pants, she is there.

Exhibit #2

So now most people when putting on the pair of pantalones, would follow the conventions of the average everyday peasant. But Cecily, she is a trend setter. Look how she, with a flash of genius and inspiration, can transform, neigh, exhault this pair of average pants into a smoking pencil skirt.

Exhibit #3
The scarey thing is that she is aware of her genius. See the knowing smile. You can't deny the intellectual and artistic superiority.

Exhibit #4

After making the discovery, she destroys the evidence and sets out to recreate another masterpiece. No it is not receiving the dowery for already arranged marriage to a rich oil barron. It is not even the down payment for her lavish wedding that is at least 25 years off. Of course it is when she is able to go to the church nursery class without parental supervision. Well at least her parental supervision. Adam has actually been taking her there for the 2nd half of the nursey class time to try and get her acclamated before the great and dreadful day. However, she is quite a mama's girl, with the dad preference a distant second, and she has not been able to stay freak out free for longer then 5 minutes alone. So the answer? Well, Amy is going to Utah for a couple of weeks and I am hoping that she can take care of the issue out there. But on the off chance that the issue is not resolveable in 3 weeks, we might have to find another approach. Any suggestions?

What a fun saturday!

Last Saturday Nate had his first lacrosse game and of course Eli came along for the ride. I think he threw the ball onto the field at least 3 times during the game. He wanted to play so badly that I had to take time out several times to toss the ball with him. We had actually been camping the night before, but I didn't get any picturesof that fiasco.

Here s the boy in his full Rush-Henrietta Royal Comets getup. He is really enjoying it and like I said before, he puts alot of his own effort into the practices and games. If I am not around he drags Eli out back to shoot on our mini goal. I'm sure that you will see more of this as the season progresses.

Not to be outdone, Cecily is getting down on her new bike, formerly known as Eli's trike. She is fastidious about the helmet. The Helmet is the best part of the ride for her. She just scoots around the driveway and onto the grass. What fun!

Later that evening we ventured out on one of our favorite family outings, a trip the the Big Barnes and Nobles in Rochester. The kid section is as big as our house and the kids could stay there for days on end. Cecily is here sampling the goods.

Where there is a train there Eli is also!

This is a classic Nate position. That is what this post is about. This is Nate playing lacrosse. They have a league up here that starts in first grade. When Amy told Nate about it he nearly jumped out of his seat. I didn't even know about it until he was signed up. He has made me practice with him almost everyday. He is really motivated to play and have fun. That is just what we want. Dad has to try not to coach too much. He just shot a goal in this picture.
I think that in this picture he is practicing scooping ground balls. I must say that he is actually really good at ground balls. He has pretty good position and he keeps his stick down. What a good kid!

Now Eli has been doing gymnastics, but they really don't let the parents stay with the kids at gymnastics because we apparently become too distracting. (see first set of pictures) But we do get plenty of Eli maddness without the organization of a gymnasium. Here we see the sweet little three year old always contemplating bicycle safety with good form and a helmet. So what if he can't see all that well.

Forward facing vision is rarely a problem for our three year old child that now knows how to propel himself forward with greater velocity than he ever has before. I got 3 to 1 odds that he has a broken arm before the fourth of july. Any takers? If so please make all bookings by July 1, 2008 and make your checks payable in advance to "I told you so!" I can't believe that he can ride a bike. Yet to come..."Look Ma, no hands!!!"

Then there is my sweet little delicate flower, quiet and demure. Relaxing in the sun swigging on 2% and having a lovely time. "Why can't my brothers just relax and take in the good life of pampering and being moms sweet girl. There is no better position in this household. So Nate, Eli and I decided to root root root for the hometeam, the Rochester Redwings and hit the diamond. The only problem, 40degrees and a chance of rain. Posh, we said and off we went. Amy got us some tickets! It was also Honor the Military day, so we got cowbells and schedule magnets. Woo hoo! It was pretty cool when the helicopters did a fly-by.
The fun was only starting. After about 5 innings and 2 downpours, we decided to follow another timeless baseball tradition and steal someone elses seats! Woo Hoo!
Thats right baby, right behind the visiting team dugout. OF course there was some serious heckling as only dad can do! Eli got into it too.

Ok, so he was tired. It was about 10:30pm and way way way past his bedtime. Not unlike Amy, when the clock strikes 10, he turns into a pumpkin. Well Eli was about done with the rain and the near freezing temps, but he wanted a baseball. Unfortunately all we got was wet. Nevertheless, we all had a great time!

Hair around here!!

See, getting a haircut is quite an experience around this place. Nate has hated haircuts from the day he was born, and I am not sure he has yet gotten over his distaste for them. But as they are inevitable, and as we are very cheap, haircut day was friday. I must say the Greenway clan has a long history of maternal barberism. I mean that soley ain a cosmetological sense. Grandma Greenway always cut her boys hair, except for joel and he is like Obama, elite. So the torch has passed to Amy and you get to witness the results.

Nate "the hairy beast" before:

Nate after the barber struck!

Eli before:

ELI AFTER

:

Adam as he expects to be in the future.(just practicing) Hey, I am trying to look a little bit more intimidating. Huh. yeah I knew it. Well if you are looking for repentence then you better look at persimmonpoppy.blogspot.com. There Amy will apologize enough for the both of us. Maybe she already has. Now we are back on track. Hopefully we will be able to keep our act together enough to maintain at least regular postings.

Here is the news;

We are loving Rochester very much. Nate and Eli have dove, dived, whatever right in and made some great friends. This is the first place that Nate and Eli have lived where they could run outside and play with kids their age. Here is a heartwarming scene!

See those are children playing in our backyard!!! We have quite a diversity of friends. Diversity is good. Ages range from 3-10, and they play together great.

It has also been great to be close to Palmyra. Amy will add more pictures, but I am going to scoop her with just one. Sunday morning before General Conference we did a little FHE field trip to the Sacred Grove. It was beautiful weather and a great spirit.

The FHE snack was yummy cinnamon rolls (like there is any other kind) and milk. Of course, we forgot the cups, but on the brighter side, all the moonshine jug bendin' finally paid off for Nate and Eli. (Veiled KY reference)

On whole it was a great way to prepare for conference and embarass ourselves in public one more time.

Cheers!

This is going to be our new house here in NY

Well here you have it.
